U.S. Census Bureau numbers from earlier this year show that Idaho was the fourth-fastest growing state in 2023.
With people flocking to the area, Kootenai County entrepreneurs are opening businesses or expanding to new locations to keep up with the growing demands for the expanding population size.
Peak Health and Wellness Center moved to an expansive 50,000-square-foot facility in late August on Fennecus Road in Post Falls.
Members transferred from the former Polston Avenue location and the larger facility and was able to take on about 550 new memberships between August and October.
The new fitness site costs about $16 million and includes eight indoor and four outdoor pickleball courts, strength equipment, cardio and group fitness, a kids club, juice bar, pro shop and full locker rooms.
PEAK also operates fitness centers in Hayden and Coeur d'Alene.
The announcement of a Trader Joe’s coming to garnered a flurry of activity from residents, and the opening of the store Nov. 12 at 303 E. Spokane St., Coeur d’Alene was met with customers waiting in line for the store to open. The space was remodeled from the former Runge's Furniture and used about half the space of the furniture store.
Post Falls ER and Hospital opened in August on Beck Road in Post Falls.
The new “micro hospital” is focused on 24/7 concierge health care and is one of 22 “micro hospitals” in 10 states owned by Houston-based Nutex Health.
The medical facility has 12 ER beds, five inpatient beds, a procedure room and in-house laboratory services within its 25,000-square-foot location. The medical center also includes an in-house pharmacy and an imaging suite.
Concierge care for the micro hospital means follow-up care without a monthly fee or membership costs.
Rathdrum Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ashley Cameron highlighted the new Rathdrum branch of Cascadia Pizza as quickly jumping into community action after opening this summer.
Cascadia Pizza “demonstrated exceptional commitment to our community” by providing support for veteran, youth and community initiatives, Cameron said.
The restaurant focuses on Neapolitan inspired wood-fired pizza.
Lancaster Market, located at the intersection of Lancaster and Highway 95 in Rathdrum has convenience market necessities as well as a fueling station. A San Francisco Sourdough eatery with a drive-through window is available for take-out orders and the site hosts rotating "Beers on Tap" with branded growlers.
Montana Sash and Door opened a location in Rathdrum to bring new local options for windows and door design. Home fixtures offer a variety of options ranging from Inland Northwest mainstays to contemporary design.

Boiada Brazilian Grill opens Dec. 6, injecting Brazilian cuisine to the local food scene. The steakhouse will offer slow-cooked meats and a fresh-market table located at 2380 N. Old Mill Loop in Riverstone.
Madd Chicken is set to open soon at 1520 Government Way (at Hazel).
Grocery Outlet store should open early in 2025 at North Point Plaza at the intersection of Poleline and Highway 41 north of Post Falls.
Next December, the 151-room Hyatt Place Hotel is on track to open at the Millworx development on Fourth Avenue.
Prairie Crossing Shopping Center being developed at the northeast corner of Highway 41 and Prairie Avenue in Post Falls.
The Marriott Hotel host a six-story location at 612 E. Sherman Ave. with 131 guest rooms, 130 parking stalls on the main level and three levels underground.
U-Haul Self-Storage is also being developed at Seltice Way and Herborn Place in Post Falls.
