40 Under 40: Christine Smith

Christine Smith is a project manager for HMH Engineering with a background in civil engineering.
She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Boise State University in 2016. Directly after graduation she moved to Coeur d’Alene, where she heard from a family friend that HMH Engineering was hiring civil engineers.
For the past eight years she has worked for HMH, starting as a staff engineer, becoming a project engineer once she gained her professional engineering license in 2021 and now as a project manager.
"HMH has given me the flexibility to gain experience in several different subdisciplines of civil engineering, allowing me to grow as an engineer and become a well-rounded professional," she said. "Presently, I work in transportation, land development and municipal engineering."

"My college experience was wonderful, Smith said. "I feel that my college education, more than anything, gave me the ability to problem solve and think critically. Beyond that, working in the industry and being surrounded by professionals and incredible mentors has given me a solid foundation and education that shaped me as a professional engineer."
Smith credits her hard-working parents for instilling in her a work ethic and drive that have pushed her to keep growing her career.
"I’m so thankful for their guidance throughout my life," she said.
She is also appreciative of her husband, a wonderful life partner who inspires her every day.
"I am grateful to have accomplished more than I thought I would in the relatively short eight years working in the industry," Smith said. "In the coming years, I hope to keep designing infrastructure that leaves a positive, lasting impact on the communities in North Idaho.
Advice to her younger self: "Never let a fear of judgement or anxiety prevent you from asking questions — it’s the best way to learn."
