40 Under 40: Devin Weeks

Devin Weeks is a reporter and photographer for the Coeur d'Alene Press.

Weeks started as a student journalist at Coeur d'Alene High School. She obtained an Associate of Science in Journalism from North Idaho College and a Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts from Lewis-Clark State College Coeur d'Alene. She worked on NIC's student newspaper, the Sentinel, from 2009-2012, during which time she was a section editor and served as the managing editor her final year at NIC.

Weeks began as an intern at the Coeur d'Alene Press in March 2013, then worked five days a week including weekends while finishing her senior year at LCSC-CDA. She was hired full time at The Press upon graduation in 2014.

"I have been here ever since, minus five months to explore a different career," she said. "Journalism always called me back."

The countless hours of newspaper work she did in high school and college prepared Weeks for a career in journalism.

"The Sentinel provided valuable experience as I worked as a student reporter and editor," Weeks said. "My time at LCSC-CDA helped me understand the other side of the communications coin — public relations, marketing and other media-related experience. My schooling also helped me forge lifelong friendships and connections that continue to this day."

She credits her friends, family and mentors for helping her achieve her career goals, especially her mom and dad, Vicki and Richard Heilman, and her husband, Josh Weeks, for their unwavering love and support.

"I owe a lot to those who have given me their love and guidance through the years," Weeks said. "I would not be who I am without them. I am thankful for them every day, as well as those who trust me with their stories in my work at The Press."

Advice to a past self: "Give yourself more credit. Be assertive! Be brave! Fortune favors the bold! Also — start your clip book early so you don't have to go through 4,000 articles by the time you get around to it."
