The executive director of finance at Northwest Specialty Hospital, JJ Turbin has worked in the healthcare industry for over 10 years.

While he works in finance, Turbin said it is an undergraduate degree in communications that  laid the foundation for how he tries to lead and collaborate today.

"Effective communication is essential in healthcare finance — whether it’s working with teams, presenting financial strategies, or ensuring complex information is understood across departments," he added.

An MBA in healthcare management has given him the financial and operational expertise to apply these skills in a strategic way. Together, that communications training and that in healthcare management have both shaped his ability to bridge the gap between numbers and people, helping drive informed decisions and stronger financial performance in healthcare.

Turbin said while it’s hard to pinpoint just one thing that shaped who I am today, he credits his parents and his upbringing for the person he has become.

"The way my parents raised me — to work hard, stay humble, and pursue my faith — has been a constant foundation," he said.

Beyond that, he said numerous mentors, coaches, and experiences have influenced me along the way. College athletics taught me discipline and teamwork, while my wife and daughters continue to give me perspective and purpose.

"All of these experiences have shaped how I lead and make decisions both personally and professionally," Turbin said.

He loves works in healthcare at Northwest Specialty Hospital, saying it is a great place to work, and he loves the impact the hospital is able to have in the community and in residents' lives.

On a personal level, his focus is on spending time with his wife and kids.

Advice to his younger self: "I’d tell my younger self to focus on what’s in front of me and not get bogged down by things beyond my control. Take in the experiences and opportunities that come your way, and be present with the people that matter most."
