Where healing is the adventure

Hospice of North Idaho's annual Camp Kaniksu wrapped up another meaningful weekend at the end of June, providing comfort, connection, and healing for children navigating the loss of a loved one. This year, 31 campers ages 6 to 16 gathered for a weekend of shared experiences, fun activities, and heartfelt support all in the peaceful setting of HONI's campus and Camp Lutherhaven.

Camp Kaniksu is a free bereavement camp tailored specifically for children and teens who have experienced the death of someone close to them. Designed as a safe, supportive environment, the camp combines traditional outdoor fun with therapeutic activities that help campers express their grief and build resilience.

This year’s success was made possible by a passionate team of 15 trained volunteers and 4 dedicated Hospice of North Idaho (HONI) staff members, each playing a vital role. From acting as one-on-one “Camp Buddies,” to facilitating group activities like crafts and grief activities, to setting up, taking down, and making sure every detail ran smoothly with each person bringing heart and purpose to their role. One volunteer focused on capturing special moments, ensuring families could see the joy and growth experienced throughout the weekend.

Abigail, HONI’s Bereavement Coordinator and Camp Director, reflected on the experience:

“We were able to have a very meaningful weekend starting with our Family Night on our HONI campus. I had the kids’ families and guardians send me a photo of their loved ones, and they got to decorate frames for those photos together on Friday. Then we headed out to Camp Lutherhaven on Saturday and Sunday, where we got to do some fun classic camp activities, some heartwarming grief activities, and enjoy some time on the lake. On Saturday evening, we honored campers loved ones with a luminary ceremony on the waterfront. I am very grateful for the strong group of volunteers that we have and for the HONI staff that helped me make this happen.”

Throughout the weekend, campers took part in activities designed to foster emotional expression, teamwork, and confidence. Whether sharing their stories in circle time, bonding during outdoor activities, or creating memorial crafts, the young participants found a community that understands and supports them.

As one camper shared, “I didn’t think anyone else felt the way I did, but now I know I’m not alone.”

With continued community support and donations, Hospice of North Idaho looks forward to offering Camp Kaniksu year after year, ensuring that no grieving child in our region walks their path alone.
